At Leeming Education Support Centre, CBL is a dynamic training program where students are taught independence, functional academics, and protective behaviours to improve their post-school social and employment opportunities. Training occurs across settings and is developed to expand student experiences and provide ‘real’ learning in community settings.

Training commences on the school site where the individual student is trained and assessed across five domains these are:

Community Behaviours

Includes: Protective Behaviours, appropriate speech and language, following instructions, care of personal items and shopping behaviours.

Road Safety

Includes: Carpark and road crossing, using community safety signs and equipment such as bollards and sensory pads, and knowing where it is safe to cross.

Orientation

Includes: Using street names, landmarks, maps and directional terms in the community and in stores.

Transport Training

Includes: transport behaviours, transport safety, using online resources, understanding community signs and building independence.

Functional Academics

Mathematics and English skills are developed to improve community access and comprehension in the community

The school-developed scope and sequence, identifies skills in these five domains and is taught in a planned sequential manner. Training commences at school and is broadened to include local shops, shopping centres, and city precincts as determined by the student’s year level and capabilities.

When students have developed skills across the domains they are assessed and considered for independent travel training by the school-funded Transport Co-ordinator.
